Go down the rabbit hole and see how we recently celebrated my daughters first “ONE”derland birthday with an Alice in Wonderland tea party. Here I’ll go over how I added whimsical charm without breaking the bank
I still can’t believe I have a one year old- where did the time go. I know everyone says that, but seriously! I feel like we were just in the hospital getting ready to bring her home. Anyways, I couldn’t wait to celebrate her first year with our closest friends and family at the house. I love the fun whimsy Alice brings, and it was a perfect opportunity to whip out my Mackenzie Childs I’ve collected over the years! With the help of Amazon and Trader Joe’s, I’ll show you how I created an Alice in Wonderland birthday tea party fit for my little queen.
Alice in Wonderland Tea Food
The backbone to every great party- I went with a little tea party spread that required no utensils. Perfect little finger foods for a Sunday afternoon get together. What’s on the menu?

- Mini Lemon Cupcakes
- Chicken Salad Croissant Sandwiches
- Italian Pinwheels
- Deviled Eggs
- Mini Quiches
- Scones
- Strawberry Jam & Orange Zest Honey Butter
- Cucumber Dill Tea Sandwiches
- Fresh Fruit
To save money I made the lemon cupcakes and lemon buttercream frosting myself and stuffed them with lemon curd- such a nice little surprise in the middle! Tip: I made the cupcakes a week ahead and popped them in the freezer until the day before. One less thing to do! The lemon curd I bought from Trader Joe’s, it’s simply the best! I made the frosting 2 days before and let it sit out until it was ready to pipe, topped with some fresh lemon zest.
My mother-in-law was gracious enough to make the pinwheels, scones, and the orange zest honey butter. It’s safe to say she is now an expert at scones, and I’m an expert at tastings.
I also pre made the chicken salad, which I’ll be posting my recipe later one- and layered it up with croissants from Costco (the macaroons and mini quiches were also from Costco)
No Party is complete without deviled eggs– such an inexpensive crowd pleaser! There’s never any left. I found a recipe on Pinterest for the Cucumber Dill spread, which I doctored up a little for personal taste. Fresh Dill is the way to go! I had my sisters use a mandolin slicer to get them super thin-It was my first time having them at a party and they were a huge hit! I definitely should have made more.
Alice in Wonderland Decor
I used mostly Amazon for all the fun props, which I’ll link below. I hung banners and giant playing cards from the ceiling to add some fun. I went to Trader Joe’s for the flowers- no party is complete without fresh flowers! I swear they have the best selection and each were under $5. My favorite was the unicorn baby’s breath that I spread around the buffet table and food. I got so many compliments- it really went so well with the theme. I put my mom on flower duty, she’s incredible at arrangements. And of course, my Mackenzie Child’s Courtly Check was on full display. I used the tea kettle as a centerpiece and fill it with flowers, with pops of moss, playing cards and butterflies. So fun!
My husband and best friend dressed up as TweedleDe and TweedleDumb- such good sports!
The Weather worked out for us, so we were able to use the deck for the drink station- Pink Lemonade, Sweet Tea, and Mimosas. I spruced up the planters with daffodils, vinca vine, and violas for fun color, complete with flamingos- Off with their heads!
